About Oak View Studio

Director:   Robert Dowling MA (Cantab) RIBA

I formed Oak View Studio in 2009 as a sole practitioner. Housing for private clients has been the backbone of the practice work and my aim has been quality in design and execution.

In 2020, the world looks very different. Post Extinction Rebellion and Covid-19, the direction of practice must change. For the new decade, all projects need to be sustainable – both new-build and refurbishment – with a commitment to principles of near zero carbon release, both embodied and operational. Oak View Studio is new to this field, but we have long been passionate about sustainable design and will bring with us Passivhaus designers and engineers who are specialists in this work. Each new project will bring client and design team together in this shared enterprise.

My training was at the Cambridge School of Architecture and I spent ten years learning the trade in London practices, working on public and private housing schemes. When recession hit London in the eighties, I sought work abroad, running the Middle East office of a major London practice. On return, I met AA trained Derek Tregellas and together started Tregellas Dowling Associates, entering international competitions.  Recession hit again, but not before the practice secured the commission for an innovative animal feed mill in Norfolk.  A period of freelance working followed, including for a time, on the Jubilee Line Extension project, returning to housing and to set up Oak View Studio in Kent.
